Welcome to Birdie’s BirdHouse.<br>A place for honest stories, quiet reflections, and reminders that none of us are walking through life alone. The Singers Went First

We have found ways to turn almost every private practice into a performance tool. Rest is supposed to make us more productive, walking gets measured in steps, and gratitude comes with its own list of promised returns: better sleep, lower stress, stronger relationships, perhaps even the life we have been trying to attract.

After a while, it can be difficult to tell when thankfulness stops being an expression and starts becoming a strategy. The difference matters most when we are afraid. A layoff notice, a medical result, or a bill we cannot yet cover can make gratitude feel like one more thing we should do correctly so the situation will turn in our favor.

There is an old account in Second Chronicles about a king facing an army he could not defeat. He admitted that he was afraid and did not know what to do. The people were told that God would fight for them, and that their task was to take their positions and watch. By morning, singers were walking ahead of the soldiers, giving thanks while the army was still on its way. The account says the ambush began as they started to sing, which invites a simple reading: the song set it off.

But the promise came before the song.

The singing gave them another way to walk toward the danger. It stayed real, but it no longer had the only word.

Most of us are not handed an assurance that plain. We still have to decide what gratitude means while the answer is still out.

What does gratitude become when it is no longer trying to make anything happen?
