Angels in Disguise

I call them angels in disguise. People who showed up in my most vulnerable moments and made sure I was taken care of when I could have easily become another number, another face moving quietly through a hard season unnoticed. They may not have fully understood the weight of what I was carrying, but they showed up anyway. Fully. Consistently. And because they did, my story turned out differently.

They didn’t know they were sent. That’s the part that still stays with me.

There’s a moment in the book of Numbers where Moses, leading an entire people through the wilderness, turns to his brother-in-law and says, “Come with us.” Hobab wasn’t a spiritual leader. He wasn’t even part of the community Moses was leading. But he knew the terrain. He knew where water could be found, where it was safe to stop, how to survive land that could swallow people who didn’t know what they were doing. Moses recognized that the right guide had already been placed beside him long before he realized he would need one.

That’s often how grace arrives.

The people who carry you through difficult seasons rarely announce themselves as life-changing figures. Usually they look ordinary. A nurse who stayed a little longer. A friend who answered the phone every time. Someone who spoke gently to you on a day when you were barely holding yourself together. They may have thought they were doing something small. But sometimes small things change the direction of a person’s life.

You usually don’t recognize it while it’s happening. Survival narrows your vision. It’s only later, when you look back across the landscape of your life, that you begin to see the pattern. The timing. The provision. The people who appeared exactly when they were needed.

They were yours for that season, whether they ever knew it or not.

And maybe that’s one of the quietest ways God moves through this world. Not always through grand moments or dramatic signs, but through ordinary people carrying light into places they didn’t even realize were dark.

That’s not coincidence.

That’s grace. ✨
