This morning in church, we talked about mercy. The kind that comes from God and the kind we hope to get from people. God’s mercy is steady. It shows up without needing to be earned. It meets us right where we are, no matter how many times we fall short. That mercy is guaranteed. People, though? That’s another story. You can give grace, show up for others, try to do the right thing, and still not get the same in return. And when that happens, it can leave you feeling tired, hurt, and wondering if it even matters.
But what stood out today was the reminder that even Jesus was met with judgment and cruelty. He poured out compassion, and many gave Him none. So if you have ever felt like your mercy was wasted, you are not alone. It is not weakness to be kind when it is not returned. God sees every time you choose to respond with patience, with love, with forgiveness. He sees what no one else does, and He honors it. That kind of return is worth more than any praise from people.
You are not giving in vain. You are not losing by leading with grace. Every time you extend mercy, you are creating more room for God’s mercy in your own life. It may not come from the ones you gave it to, but it will come. And it will be enough.
