I used to brush off compliments without even thinking.
“Oh, this old thing?”
Or, “No, I still have a long way to go.”
Somewhere along the way, I started asking myself:
Why is it easier to believe the criticism than the kind words?
Now when someone says something kind, I pause.
I breathe it in.
I say, “thank you,” even if it still feels a little awkward.
I don’t need to earn the compliment.
I can just receive it.
That’s where I am right now, learning to let the good in.
